Cannabis for Cold and Flu Symptoms

We’ve all had the common old or flu. Many of us get sick with the sore throat, stuffy nose, cough, body aches, and malaise once every season. It often feels like we’ve been suddenly hit by a truck and the flu ups the ante with the added fever, headaches and often extreme exhaustion. But when you get the cold or flu there isn’t much you can do other than let it run its course (typically five to seven days). There are many different treatments that people use for treating cold and flu symptoms but let’s talk about how to use cannabis for cold and flu.

Treating a cold or flu

Doctors typically recommend getting lots of rest and fluids as the main treatment method for the common cold and flu. There are no medications, like antibiotics, that can effectively get rid of either of these illnesses. The only recommended medications are those that help to reduce fever and manage pain, like anti-inflammatories such as Tylenol or ibuprofen.

Cannabis for Cold and Flu

Wouldn’t it be nice to just get high to get through the symptoms? I mean, CBD does provide anti-inflammatory effects, can we just use that instead of Tylenol?

The simple answer is: yes.

Cannabis, particularly CBD, can help to manage symptoms such as inflammation, pain (particularly headaches) fever and can help you sleep. But there’s no evidence to suggest that using cannabis directly impacts the cold or flu virus or shortens the overall duration of symptoms.

That being said, you might want to think twice before lighting up.

Cold/Flu and Smoking

Both cold and flu are illness that impacts our respiratory system, so the heat and smoke associated with inhaling cannabis can further irritate sore throats and make coughing worse. Smoke can also further irritate mucous membranes in the lungs; Dr. Shawn Meirovici from the Apollo Clinic cautions against smoking cannabis while experiencing cold or flu systems.

Be aware of passing around joints during cold and flu season. While this can be an integral part of the cannabis community it’s also a great way to spread germs. Stay healthy!
