Microdosing Psilocybin- Everything you need to know
Miss Envy has added a something new to our existing line of wellness products, Scooby Snacks, psilocybin wellness caps! They’re made with the intention of microdosing (250 mg psilocybin per capsule). Here, we are going to discuss everything you need to know about microdosing psilocybin.
Disclaimer: Psilocybin is a potentially illegal substance, and we do not encourage or condone the use of this substance where it’s against the law. This guide is designed to ensure the safety of those who use it legally.
What is psilocybin? How does it work?
It’s one of the most well-known hallucinogens that occurs naturally in mushrooms (often referred to as ‘magic mushrooms’).
Psilocybin is converted to psilocin in the body and is believed to influence serotonin levels in the brain. This can lead to altered and unusual perceptions depending on the dose. The effects take 20 to 40 minutes to begin and can last up to 6 hours—the amount of time it takes for psilocin to be metabolized and excreted (source).
What is microdosing?
Microdosing is the act of consuming an unnoticeable amount of a psychedelic substance. Unnoticeable meaning the dose doesn’t create the hallucinogenic effects associated with psychedelics. This, of course, does not mean there are no benefits.
Microdosing psilocybin is reported to have both short term and long term benefits for individuals. Those who incorporate microdosing into their regular wellness routine report higher levels of creativity, more energy, increased focus, and improved relational skills.
People seem to use psilocybin for one of two reasons:
- To reduce symptoms and frequency of symptoms related to mental illness. Such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, ADHD and addictions.
- To increase the frequency and intensity of desirable states, such as; creativity, energy, productivity/focus, and improved relationships/increased empathy.
What the research says about microsdosing psilocybin
Currently, we have more information about the effects of psilocybin at higher doses but more research is being conducted on the impacts and benefits of microdosing.
Eminent psychedelic researchers have found positive effects on mood disorders and anxiety. In fact, The Beckley Foundation is spearheading the push for the legalization of psilocybin mushrooms, backed by long-term positive effects found in their research conducted on treatment-resistant depression patients.
Addictions, such as smoking, can also be overcome with psilocybin. Researchers at Johns Hopkins reported an 80 percent abstinence rate among a group of longtime smokers who took psilocybin as part of their therapy.
Aside from psychological issues, mushrooms have been found to be “comparable to or more efficacious than most conventional medications” in treating cluster headaches. Many people have experienced extended periods of remission after taking them.
How to Microdose Psilocybin
Take a microdose once every three days. For most people, morning is the best time because the beneficial effects will last throughout the day and because nighttime microdosing could interfere with sleep.
Therefore; take a microdose on Day 1. Then do not microdose on Day 2 or Day 3. Then, take another microdose on Day 4.
During this time it’s important to observe and record the effects. Take notes on both short-term, in-the-moment effects, and long-term changes in your mood, energy, and social behaviour. Be sure to observe the effects of microdosing on the two days between doses. Many people perceive increased feelings of creativity, and energy the day after they microdose, as well as the day of microdosing.
Ideally, you should follow your usual routine while microdosing as the purpose is to enhance your day-to-day existence by integrating microdoses into your routine. However, when you try microdosing for the first time, take a day off from work and social commitments. It will give you a chance to observe and notice any unusual effects before microdosing in a more public situation.
Continue the process of microdosing two times per week for several weeks.
Why every 3 days?
Taking a dose every day isn’t recommended. Using psychedelics, such as psilocybin, can create a tolerance, therefore you might see diminishing returns. Additionally, the fact that positive effects can often be felt many days after a microdose is a good reason to space out your doses. In other words, microdosing every day is unnecessary because the impacts last for several days already.
Also, you should only microdose for a few weeks to a month then take a break as this also has the potential to impact your tolerance by requiring a higher dose to see the same impacts. It’s best to view microdosing as an occasional advantage, rather than a consistent go-to or requirement.
There is a potential heart risk of taking too many psychedelics over a long period of time. Although we don’t know how this translates when it comes to microdosing, it’s probably best to err on the side of caution.
The Best Dose for Microdosing Psilocybin
As with cannabis, there is no universal dose for microdosing psilocybin. A typical psychedelic dose, for someone with average body weight, is about 3.5 grams when the mushroom is dried. A microdose is roughly 1/10th of that dosage (1/10th of 3.5 grams is 350 mg).
That being said there are many factors that influence the best dose for a particular individual. Some of these factors include; body size and previous experience with psychedelics. So, when microdosing psilocybin for the first time it’s important to start smaller and monitor the impacts. This is why we have dosed our psilocybin wellness caps at 250 mg per capsule as this is likely a decent starting point for many people.
Some recommend starting at an even smaller initial dose, particularly for those who are new to psychedelics and microdosing. You can start with a dose as low as 100 mg (or less). Then, after your first microdose you can adjust and increase accordingly. Since you’re already taking detailed notes of your experience you can increase the dose until you get to an amount that makes you feel some changes (drowsiness is likely the first impacts you’ll notice) and then roll the dose back to just under that (you’ve found your sweet spot). A reminder that if you’re going to do it this way ensure you’re doing so on days void of responsibility in case you feel that onset of drowsiness.
How to Microdose with Miss Envy’s Scooby Snacks
With Miss Envy’s Scooby snacks you can easily turn this microdose into a smaller dose than 250 mg if you prefer. They’re easily opened (just be careful) to adjust your dose. The best way to do so is to split the cap in half approximately. This would give you approximately 125 mg of psilocybin.
How to take the microdose once you’ve open the capsule:
- Put half into a new capsule, which you can purchase online.
- Put the microdose into food or a beverage.
- Use the parachute method. Put the microdose into a small piece of toilet paper (or a rolling paper works really good for this) and use this to swallow and not taste it.
It may be a good idea to invest in a scale, if you haven’t already, so you can more accurately measure your dose. Though note the psilocybin may not be evenly distributed inside the capsule so doses less than 250 mg will always be an approximation.
Microdosing psilocybin can have many benefits when incorporated into your regular wellness routine. So, Miss Envy has incorporated other ingredients into our psilocybin wellness caps that impact your overall health. These ingredients include; ginkgo biloba, bee pollen, spearmint, ginseng, spirulina. Learn more about these ingredients and how they impact your health in our Scooby Snack introduction article.
